Programme note

My setting of the Matin Responsory aims to give a contemporary update to the version attributed to Palestrina (with a little help from David Willcocks) that is performed at King’s College, Cambridge (and elsewhere) every year. It follows the same responsory form as the Palestrina with newly harmonised choral sections that follow the shape of the original, but provide a different harmonic and emotional palette. As with much of my work, this is more of a ‘re-encountering’ of the text, form and feel of the responsory than a wholly new take on the genre.
