Programme note

Secret Ceremonials is essentially a set of theme and variations, but rather than varying a given melody, here different textures, fragments and motifs are taken apart and put back together in a variety of different ways. The work is also an exploration of a very rigid harmonic design with each ‘variation’ starting from the same harmonic point and traversing the same distance, but in a different fashion.

With a background in conducting, composition and hybrid media, his creative practice has long been shaped by an interest in atmosphere, structure and the relationship between sound, image and place. Photography has been a lifelong companion — a way of slowing down, noticing light, and finding quiet meaning in everyday scenes.
