PROGRAMME NOTE
The Strawberry Thief is inspired by William Morris’s textile design of the same name, currently housed in the V&A Museum in London. Morris’s textile takes as its subject the thrushes that Morris found stealing fruit in his kitchen garden of his countryside home, Kelmscott Manor, in Oxfordshire. I have always admired much of what the Arts and Crafts Movement stood for, and especially liked the work of Morris and this particular print. When commissioned to write a work for flute and clarinet duet for a wedding, the subject matter of the print seemed to fit the brief: two competing voices, coming in and out of focus before finally settling into a sense of harmony.
